The Open Spaces Program provides residencies to artists which include studio space at no cost and accomodation at no cost. The bedrooms are spacious and the accomodation includes a shared shower-room and lavatories. There is also a large shared kitchen and lounge area.

All other costs, such as travel, travel insurance, visas, food, materials and so on are not included and must be covered by the artist.

The program administrators are all practising artists and will work hard to ensure that your arrival and stay in Switzerland is as smooth and comfortable as can be.

Open Spaces will put on an exhibition of resident artists’ works at the end of each residency. A 10% commission will be taken by the program on works sold by the resident artists during the end of residency show.

General costs can be expected to be as follows:

• • Materials – We recommend that artists bring their own materials from home.

    Materials and travel costs in Switzerland can be quite high. For example a return ticket to Lausanne is 64.- CHF (Swiss Francs).

• • Food – We recommend budgeting at least 100.- CHF per week.

    You may find you can live on quite a lot less per week, but if you budget this amount, you should not go hungry.

• • Travel – Our deadlines are early so that you can book the cheapest tickets for your travel to Switzerland.

    If flying, we recommend travelling to Geneva airport and taking the train to Gstaad via Montreux. Switzlerand has a well developped and very punctual public transort system. Travelling by train between cities is very easy but can be expensive. Costs for the local post bus service vary between 2.- and 6.- per trip.

• • As a general rule, we would recommend you budget about 200.- CHF per week that you are here or a total of 800.- per month. This should be plenty to cover the types of costs you are likely to encounter if you plan on eating in most of the time, exploring the local alpine area by foot or by bike and perhaps plan one or two day trips further afield per month that you are here. You may find you have quite a lot left over, but that is point of budgeting – over-budget and under-spend and you will never be in trouble. This is Switzerland!
